Do you dream of sitting in your studio slathering generous layers of oil paint onto a canvas, changing a blank wall into a masterpiece? Can you see yourself as a member of the The Art Tour, traveling with artists as you help them promote themselves through the sale of their art or writing reviews of them on a blog? In short, do you love to create? If so, then your field of study in university will probably lie somewhere underneath the 'arts' umbrella, as arts is the 'subjective' side of academics, as opposed to the scientific or 'objective' side. Arts can be a very rewarding program of study if you're truly suited for it.

One of the things that people often wonder about when they're considering signing up for arts-related programs in university is what sort of jobs you can get with a degree in arts. This is something you should look into before you sign up, just to make sure you aren't closing any doors you wanted to keep open. For example, a degree in arts may allow you go on to study Toronto real estate but it will not allow you to apply for a graduate degree in medicine. If the limitations of a degree in arts don't bother you, that's fine, but you should at least know what they are before committing.

There are many different disciplines that fall under the broader definition of 'arts' and you will most likely have to choose one before you will be awarded a degree. This is another important decision that you will have to make, so if you thought arts would be easy, think again. Some disciplines are specialized and closer to what most people think of as art, such as painting and learning to use a pastels, while there are other disciplines of 'arts' that could include everything from history to literature.

Practically every school in Canada, whether it's a university or college, offers some kind of arts program. Rarely will you have to venture outside of Canada to study the discipline you're interested in, which makes arts one of the most successful programs in Canadian colleges. To choose the right school for you is still a difficult task, however, especially if you're looking to come out with the right credentials to impress that graphic design firm, Toronto art gallery, or museum you've had your eye on.

Studying arts isn't for everyone, though arts and art related programs are often the most popular with university students - not because there's a lot of interest in faux painting techniques among today's youth, but because arts is often the program that people sign up for when they don't know what else to do with themselves. Both the artistic and undecided impulses are valid ones to join the field, but the artistic are often happier with the results of their study than are the undecided. So stop putting off your decision.
